General Investigations Unit (GIU)

About the Unit

The General Investigations Unit (GIU) is comprised of one detective sergeant, one corporal, three detectives, and an administrative assistant. Detectives assigned to this unit investigate crimes that require substantial in depth investigations. Crimes assigned to this unit include, but are not limited to theft, burglary, robbery, murder, sex-related crimes, identity theft, fraud, property crimes, and cyber/internet related crimes. The unit is responsible for maintaining and updating cold case investigations for unsolved missing person and homicide cases.  GIU is also responsible for gathering intelligence data and being the liaison for intelligence communications for local, state, and federal agencies.

Detectives not only investigate cases but are also on-call seven days a week, twenty-four hours a day. Not all cases referred to the Detective Division are assigned. Cases are assigned based on certain solvability factors. Once assigned, a detective will contact the victim to review the case. Once all leads are exhausted, a case will be suspended pending any new information.
